Yay! Come to Santa Barbara! I am a little biased...:) One great place that might fit your budget is the Presidio Motel on State Street. Very reasonable, clean and well decorated, they're centrally located. You can even rent bicycles for free and cruise downtown or to the beach. I just had my wedding here in town and had guests stay there, and they raved about it.

Love your blog, btw! Keep up the good work - I wish I could save like you!

I'd go with Priceline for getting the best deal. I only recently used them (for an upcoming trip to San Fran) and got the most amazing deal. I'm a big advocate of weekend breaks. I couldn't survive living in London without them!

Have you considered checking out vacation rental apartments? A lot of San Diego places require minimum stays in the summer, but have gaps of a few nights that they'd like to fill. Studio/1bd's near the beach should run ~$150/night, and cheaper if you leave the beach area.

We've stayed in apartments in Waikiki and Puerto Rico and it was really nice to have more space and a kitchen. Just no one to make your bed for you...

Check out vrbo.com and craigslist.

I don't know about the Franciscan, but I can tell you that Andersen's on State Street is the best breakfast restaurant on the planet. Get the stuffed french toast and you'll agree!

There's also an amazing Moroccan restaurant called Chef Karim's. Lots of great food in SB.
