Dear HGTV producers:
I love your channel, and am very glad that I can find my favorite HGTV shows on hgtv.com and on hulu.com. My First Place, Property Virgins, and House Hunters kept me company while I cleaned & organized this weekend.
However, as entertaining and informative as the shows are, I’d suggest you add in a financial component as well. Or, better yet, a WHOLE NEW SHOW that not only focus on the granite and the double vanity, but on FICO scores, loan amortization, fixed vs. variable, down payments, etc – in other words, the funnest parts of the home-buying process.
In fact, I’ve already come up with a name for this new show: My First Mortgage. Not snazzy enough? Well, then, behold the collective wisdom of the personal finance blogosphere:
Readers, what would your name be for the show?

I love those shows too…I had no idea they are on Hulu, so thanks for the update.
Now I have even more of a reason to be on the computer.
Oh, I’m horrible at naming things… So I’d be the wrong person to ask. I like the My First Mortgage though, but it does sound kinda boring-accounting-ish if you get what I mean.
I like watching those shows sometimes for the financial stupidity the people occasionally display… I remember one of the shows had a girl in her early 20′s who asked her mortgage broker some stupid question… I don’t remember what it was, but I do remember that I was completely shocked that anyone would think to ask it. (She was also later complaining when the company refused to give her the original quote amount, and she was wondering how they could just “take money away like that.” Never mind she didn’t have it to begin with… And being pre-approved for a certain amount doesn’t guarantee that amount in the end. Sigh, the horrors of the financially uneducated masses. Makes great entertainment though.)
Wouldn’t it be nice if it didn’t matter what the cost? Oh well, I’ll keep dreaming.
How about “How much will this fricken process cost me?” And I’m completely serious about that. It’s candid yet gets right to the point. To offensive though?
I love ‘Property Virgins’ and ‘House Hunters’ too. Continuing in the same vein, [erhaps a good title for the show would be ‘Mortgage Virgins’?
I am employee of Scripps Networks (parent of HGTV) and will see what I can do about passing your idea along. In the meantime, HGTV does have a sister website with financial information: http://www.frontdoor.com/
Hi Jen,
I have an idea for an HGTV show. Can you offer some insight as to the process to get my idea to the right people?
Thanks,
Kira
What a great idea. You should really pitch something to them! You could be famous!
Very cute idea – I would watch the show, just like I watch almost everything else on HGTV
ABSOLUTELY! Otherwise our only options are Gail Vaz Oxlade’s Til Debt Do Us Part and Suzy Ormand who certainly doesn’t relate 99% of the time (especially to us Canadians) There used to be a show called Moneysense with Garth Turner which I really enjoyed that discussed things like this, albeit more stocks and bonds related but also discussed real estate as well.
I fully agree.
Common Cents.
Let’s do it!!
How about: Diving into the Mortgage Loan shark pool? I have dealt with several mortgage brokers over the years and it is very much like diving into a pool of sharks – who is going to take the first bite out of your wallet……..
Dear HGTV: This is somewhat off the subject of the letters above, but I cannot seem to find any other place to voice my protest.
For some time now I’ve been loving the great programs that you produce for our enjoyment and education, but I have a problem and that is: Too many times, I think, as your remodelers are gleefully destroying an entire existing kitchen, that the cabinetry still looks serviceable even if it is not the latest thing in style and beauty. I know that there are many families in this nation who do not have nice serviceable cabinets AT ALL and it pains me to watch those good cabinets being smashed to bits when, if they were more gently removed, they could be donated to those agencies that help the poor furnish apartments with no such amenities as decent (not necessarily gorgeous) kitchen cabinets. The same goes for bathroom cabinets. I’m not referring to cabinets that are falling apart or are otherwise unusable.
As you are being eco-friendly, could you not also be concerned about the destruction of wood products that could be reused by someone if care were taken to not splinter them into pieces, but to find new life for them elsewhere? Many thanks. Lisa
I have been watching HGTV for many years and have always enjoyed the shows. However, I am sick to death of House Hunters, Property Virgins, etc. and the like, what has happened to the great decorating shows like Candice Olsen, and David Bromsted. There are so many topics that could give the program a much needed punch! Enough with all the House Hunting shows. I don't know if the budget for such programs has been cut. Speaking for someone who has be a fan of HGTV for a very long time, I think your days with me are numbered, unless something more interesting happens soon. Thanks for reading my comment. I feel it's important. Thanks, Mary Lou (a shaky fan).
You are all doing a great job, there is always something for everyone. I have two questions. What ever happened to the girl who won HGTV's design star last year? Her name was jennifer, and she was awesome, but I have never seen the show she was suppossed to have. The other question is why cant you have more crafting shows,,,, I miss carol duvall, and the other girls who showed us how to make almost everything. Surely there are some craft people out there who would love to display their crafty talent, and I know of several people of all ages who love to do crafts in this time with a tough economy. Enough with seeing all these 20 something kids buying 300.000 dollar homes. Been watching for 10 years, maybe more. Love it, but there needs to be something for everyone. Thanks!!
