Experience, Not Stuff

Experience, Not Stuff

Experience, not stuff: I've decided to make this my mantra to live by. It'll be hard, because I like nice things (ex: shoes), but guess which of the following I remember the most? (a) A $100 leather jacket purchased in Buenos Aires, that I've worn ONCE in 3 years. (b) A $45 hour-long horse ride on ...

Can I say blah?

by WellHeeled on February 2, 2009

That’s how I’ve been feeling lately.

I feel tired and frustrated. Most days I battle the twin evils of wanting to go to bed at 8PM and the guilt of not-studying. You’d think it’d all be easier if I’d just STUDY, right?

Right.

It was so easy in college. ALL I had to do was to study and do fun extracurricular activities. Sigh. This is another reason why I don’t consider a part-time program – working and studying for the GMAT is unpleasant enough, I can’t imagine what it’d be like working 8+ hours a day and then going to a class on Modeling Consumer Behavior for 3 more hours.

Okay. I’m going to quit complaining and hit the books.

YES. I feel this tonight too! But I didn’t do as much hitting of the books as I should have. Which means more pain the rest of the week.

I feel really distracted this week, unable to focus on school or work.

I hope you did better with your studying than I did!

I can totally relate….my husband and I both work FT during the day and take 2 MBA classes per week at night. We’ve also taken every weekend and/or week-long class available to get through at a faster pace. Not to mention I’m trying to run my small business in my “free time”. Having a life outside of school, work and business is next to impossible. But, after an agressive year of this schedule we’re almost done. So stick with it (they all tell me it will be worth it) and you’ll be done before you know it!

That’s why I’m not planning to go back to school, work is hard enough. I spent 6 months preparing for the PE (Professional Engineer) exam, studying every night and taking a class on weekends. It sucked but I passed the first time, which was my goal. I hope you can get back in the groove!

If I were you, I wouldn’t worry too much about the GMAT. 580-600 is more than enough for most of the schools.

Instead, spend time on talking with the people, current students, admissions office, program coordinator, profs.. Believe it or not, these are the people who are going to open up the door and hand over you an assistanship. The rest of the stuff is just formality.

Good luck.

You know, I find that working and going to school is actually kind of awesome. I could have different motivation patterns though. I like having a fairly packed schedule during the day because then I can schedule in studying too. Granted, it’s not a schedule for everyone, I just think there are certain personalities that take to it but I do think it’s worth consideration.

Also I don’t know about you but whenever I get the blah’s and I try to compare to undergrad, I have to remind myself that I got the blah’s in undergrad too. I just happened to have a lot more time to make up for having the blah’s that go along with studying while in undergrad. So I mean I’d try to remember to give yourself a break every once in a while because it can be tiring to come home and then motivate yourself to study – just this week I fell asleep in my books at 9:30pm. But when I actually woke up to my alarm, instead of hitting snooze, I realized just how much that sleep helped. So sometimes, it’s worth it to be nice to yourself even if you “fall behind” your schedule or whatever.

My sister is studying for her GMATs and she is having a hard time with it. I told her that she was being too hard on herself. She has a good job right now and she is stressing herself out. My suggestion was that she take a break and she is. Kind of look at everything with a fresh new outlook.
