Growing up, I’ve never been very techie, nor have I been an early-adapter of any kind. I was the last kid in my middle school class to have AIM. I didn’t get a cell phone until senior year of high school. I don’t have an iPhone. My computer is 5 years old.
Ironically, even though this is a personal finance blog, and even though I’ve never particularly chased after any tech trends, I have now fallen to a dangerous case of tech cravings… for the netbook!
This model, in particular. Ruby Red.
Small, light, decent battery life, powerful enough for blogging, twittering, web search, and the like. The $350 price is a lot easier for my pf-brain to accept than $1,000 for a traditional laptop (although I will need one in the next couple of years). It also doesn’t hurt (at all) that this little netbook is adorable.

I have the EEE PC 1000H which is very similar in spec to the Aspire One and I love it, it comes everywhere with me and is great for blogging in hotel rooms etc.
I’d like to take some credit for that influence. Just kidding. Netbooks are becoming huge right now. Even Apple is trying to get into the game.
The acer is nice, but I prefer the HP Mini 1000, hands down. And it’s CUTE!
Here are my reviews on 2 netbooks (Toshiba & HP), and Mary from SimplyForties also did 2 reviews on Acer and Asus that she and her sister bought, respectively.
Oh and the Vivienne Tam Netbook isn’t as nice in person. The red was more of an orange-red, not a deep oxblood red I was hoping for, and it was way too expensive just for a design.
The black HP Mini 1000 has a cute swirly grey design on the cover, and it is really an elegant little netbook.
Checkout techbargains.com for deals on netbooks. A few weeks ago they had the dell mini 9 for a scant $185! They typically post deals for netbooks, but be sure to do your homework first!
Haha, I have been drooling over these since Christmas! I think I’m going to buy one for myself as a graduation present. Or heavily drop hints that other people should get it for me as a graduation present!
Ooh, it’s cute! I’m getting a laptop in the next month. I’d get a netbook but we need a true replacement for our aging desktop in addition to me wanting something portable for blogging. Unfortunately none of the ones I want come in red
Considering how fast the value of electronics degrades, I might keep the laptop you have, skip the netbook and then get your new laptop on your schedule.
I just did a brief review of my Lenovo S10 Ideapad. It’s ok, not great. It fits the bill for browsing, blogging, IM and some spreadsheet work. I’m not planning on writing a book with it, but after 2 weeks with it, I am not 100% sure I should have bought it. I might have been happier with a bigger laptop with full computing power instead.
Perhaps I’m too much of a techie for netbooks, but I just don’t get it. I like to have plenty of space (500gigs) for all my music, docs, pictures, emails, tons of web design apps, etc., so my MacBook Pro suits me just fine. I understand the “ultraportability” of netbooks, but I just don’t see the change in weight and size of a netbook being that much more valuable to me.
My MBP is easy enough to carry around if I need it whether I’m going to Starbucks or across the country. Then again, as I said I’m a huge tech nerd, and my boyfriend works for one of the top two visual computing companies, so he has given me a laundry list of why netbooks are a bad buy. My main understanding is most people just end up realizing that a netbook doesn’t have the performance or space they want, so they send it back or sell it and then end up buying a bigger laptop, which is what most people should have done in the first place.
But hey, if you really think a netbook is right for you, then go for it. I still walk around with a 2 year old cellphone when everyone says I “need” an iPhone. I guess I’m not that much of a tech nerd after all
Very cute! I recently started getting into gadgets. I am a total MAC person now – iPhone, Macbook & ipod.
It is pretty cute!
I had to click the link as soon as I saw your comment!
It’s cute, but I think I like the solid glossy red better on the Aspire One (and the price is so much better!)
