Psychology of Presents to Parents

How’s that for alliteration?! icon wink Psychology of Presents to Parents

For June (combination Father’s Day and Dad’s birthday), I’m sending my parents to a weekend getaway.

Even though Mom and Dad explicitly told me that they “don’t need to stay in a nice hotel,” I feel weird sending them to anywhere that’s less than 4 stars.

It’s not that I’m a hotel snob, I’d stay quite happily at budget hotels or a hostel. But this is supposed to be a gift. To my parents. It’s suppose to be luxurious.

I don’t think they’d mind staying at a nice, 3 star place. Yet, a night at the local inn just doesn’t say “present” to me.

So because of a self-imposed threshhold on quality, location, and service, I’m looking at hotels in the $200/night range.

Thank goodness it’s for only one night!

That’s so sweet of you! I don’t think I could ever put up my parents in a motel or a cheap room either. I mean, they’ve done everything for us and made us who we are…so only the best for them! Besides, the accommodations add to the experience!

That is sweet! I am really looking forward to when I can do stuff like this for my parents, too…

  3. Wow. That’s so sweet. I’m pretty sure your parents will appreciate your gift.

    Hi,
I wanted to add to your conversation:
What a beautiful act to do for your parents, I’m sure they will enjoy every moment.
If in this great world we understand “reciprocity” is what we give out that comes right back at us.
    Thank you

  5. That’s a great present!

And I can completely relate, I know that I’m perfectly happy in budget places and that my mom wouldn’t mind. But at the same time, it’s not quite “present-like” (to me, anyway) if it isn’t something special, which generally winds up being more expensive.

Send them to the four seasons, they will love it!!

Are you looking through Orbitz/Expedia? You should be able to get some 3-4 star hotels for less than $200. I know Sheraton here in Seattle is running some specials right now ($85/night) so maybe it’s a countrywide phenomenon?

Either way, what you’re doing is very thoughtful and they’re sure to truly enjoy the amenities of a nicer place.
