Food is the Currency of a Mother's Love

Or, at least, my mother’s love.

Mom called me last night and suggested and CB and I go to brunch with her and Dad this weekend. Of course I accepted. Outing with parents = free food! Mmmm… I’m already dreaming of BBQ pork buns and shrimp dumplings.

Even though I have paid for dinner on few special occasions (Dad’s birthday, family gathering with aunts and uncles visting from overseas), my parents still pay for the vast majority of our meals together.

For now, I’m still young enough that the thinking in my family goes: ”parents should feed the kid.” I figure I have until 30 before the balances tips to “kid should treat the parents” when it comes to normal meals out.

Does anyone else’s parents do this?

LMAO, occasionally, but not every time… but then again whenever I go to my mom’s she makes a ton of food to feed us… lol

My parents live in Thailand. So when I visited them, they always treated us in everything. When they visited me here in the states, it is my turn to pay..

Yes, it’s definitely the oldest people present pay in my family, almost always. When I’m with my parents, they pay and when I or I and my parents are out with my grandparents, they pay.

I agree with you on that!

My parents started expecting me to pay for my own meals out when I got my first job – we would go dutch, and I would only be responsible for my own. Maybe that was a way to teach me to eat at home!

  6. Lindsey says:

My parents totally still pay if we go out, and the same with my husband’s. My grandfather would always foot the bill when my family went out to dinner, so I don’t imagine there will be much of an age limit on this kind of thing…

Wow – you describe my loving relationship with my parents!

I’m 28 and my father still insists on paying for dinner’s out 90% of the time (the few times I have managed to pay for the night out it’s been a struggle to get him to a place where he can accept it). I try to convince him to let me get the bill, I have a good job, I’m becoming well established… but he just doesn’t want to. His old Portuguese soul wants to treat his baby daughter and her husband.

Thankfully my Irish mother always lets me pay for lunch when we’re out. It’s my way of making up for my father’s insistence.

I love them and I want to contribute to the expense of dining out as a show of appreciation. But I’m not certain I will ever get my Dad to a place where he’ll let me split the bill.

My dad usually has me pay my way or guilt-trips the hell out of me if he pays. My dad’s also a jerk.

My mom, on the other hand, (they’re divorced) still pays for dinners out without fail. I have a feeling it’ll always be that way with her.

For birthdays and holidays, the children pay, but otherwise, my parents usually pay (sometimes we’ll insist on paying–especially when they’re helping us do something!). Since we’re 35, 33, 30, and 23, we’re well old enough to pay. (The 23-year-old only went to one year of college and lives at home, so she shouldn’t be mired in debt, thus allowing her the freedom to pay for some meals out–seeing as how our parents pay for all her meals at home.)

Food definitely is the currency of love in my family :) it’s one of the few things we share in common! My mum plies me with food and usually sends me home with heaps of edibles. Plus over dinner it’s not as awkward when you don’t have much to talk about.

I’m 29 and married. My parents are coming to visit me this weekend and I know I will be spending zero while they are here. My mom doesn’t let me pay for anything .The only issue I have is we are going out for Our anniversary (our 3rd their 34th) along with my husband’s parents and I know there will be a little battle over who is going to pay. We don’t see my parents all that often since we live in different states so they really like to treat us when we get together. Also my brother myself and my husband do a lot of random jobs for them so it’s how they pay us without giving us cash. The jobs we do are generally stuff in our professional fields that would cost them a lot more than price of dinner to get done. Or just extensive manual labor when we visit them .

  12. Mine started making me pay the day I got a “real” job out of school at the age of 23.

    They don’t pay any more.

  13. I will usually pay if we go out to eat but my Mom still cooks homecooked meals for me. I prefer her cooking over eating out anyday.

I’m 28 and ever since I got my first full-time job, my parents have been more than happy to let me pay for meals out! They still pay from time to time though, but whenever we go to more expensive restaurants, they don’t volunteer to pay. :) But whenever I eat at their house, my mom always makes what I want to eat; I miss her cooking now that I live so far away from them.

When I go to dinner with my mom & sister we usually take turns splitting it. I think my sister & I will treat my mom more often but she does make home cooked meals and those to me are priceless.
