You know, I consider myself to be a pretty modern woman, but I am totally swept off my feet by things like this. My guy surprised me by ordering Thai delivery last night (it was delivered right around when I started asking what he wanted to do for dinner – I didn’t even know he had ordered it), and honestly, it made me giddy with excitement.
I think as women today, we are taught growing up that we can (must be!) independent, strong, we-can-do-it-all women…it feels nice to be taken care of every once in a while, even in the most balanced of relationships.
I agree Kim! I’ve been with my fiancee for almost 6 years but I still blush when he says, “It’s my treat tonight because…” usually preceded by, you’re so nice, you’re special or just plain ILY. It’s still a very nice surprise!
My fiance and I have been together for 10-years but he still pays for dinner, and most lunches. When I pay, I have to qu ickly whip out my credit card or tell him in advance that I am treating. We both have similar incomes, but he has always been a gentleman. (In fact, only in the year ‘break’ that we took did I see a very ugly side to him, but then I like to think that we were both heartbroken!) He also often fills my cars with gas and washes them (soooo cool!!).
I’m an analyst, I work primarily with with men and will demand equality in every situation when it comes to business. I think the modern woman, no matter how financially successful, should still be treated with complete respect and some of the old school rules still apply when it comes to dating. The fact that he’s such a gentleman is why I fell in love with him in the beginning! Lastly, his 12-year old son (I refer to him as my step-son, which for all intents he is
watches his dad’s actions and words, and he is developing the same qualities when it comes to women. He is so respectful of both me and his mom!
What Red Lipstick said. I’m from the South originally and so I do feel that the man should pay, at least most of the time. BF and I have been together for a while so I do pay for some things–and we always split concert tickets, vacations, etc. down the middle–but I think most men enjoy the old-fashioned ‘courting’, albeit reimagined in a more modern way. At least, I like to think they do.
