Traffic Ticket? Maybe Not

A month ago I thought a Red Light Camera got me going through a yellow light as I was coming home from a job fair. I saw a flash and was certain that I’d be on the hook for $500 in fines and traffic school fees. I even commiserated to Mom about it (who recently got a ticket).

After a few days of feeling bad about it, I mentally wrote off the fee as a sunk cost and resigned myself for the inevitable notice in the mail.

Well, it’s been 4 weeks, and I still haven’t received a citation. I was afraid that the notice was sent to my previous address, so as soon as I got home that day I went online and updated my information to make sure that my mailing address was current. I’ve also been checking the County website for traffic citations under my driver’s license.

So no citation received in the mail. No citation showed up on the web search.

Could it be? That I’m… safe?

I hope so. But I’ll be checking the County court website for another few weeks just to be sure!

If you just went through a yellow, you’re probably fine (although technically, I learned that a yellow light means “cars in the intersection should clear it, and everyone else should stop”). It’s only if it turned red that you’re in trouble!

  2. Maybe the camera didn’t get a clear shot of your license plate!

    Bonus for you!!! :)

Sometimes those things flash but they don’t record your information – it’s a scare tactic. There is one intersection where i’ve been flashed several times for going through a yellow light, and I have yet to receive a citation.

On the other hand, a few years ago, I drove through a yellow light, did not see a flash, but got a picture of my license plate and my SMILING face in the mail along with a hefty fine. Great!

Oh, wow! Good for you! Maybe someone else went through the light right behind you or in another direction, and it snapped them instead! Either way, it’s still a good idea to keep checking for the citation. Here, if the ticket isn’t paid within so much time (I think 45 days.) they up our fine.

I got a ticket for not stopping completely before turning right on a red light last year. But it was 3 a.m.! I could see that no one was coming! Eh, I shut up, paid the ticket and learned that red means come to a complete stop, even on a right turn.

  5. One more week, I think its safe to say you’re off the hook!

  6. If you were on amber then you are safe. The amber can happen while you were going through and so this consideration will let you through. Next time be careful while driving because the sign can say amber while the other side say green and then a collision happen. All the best.

if it does come in – let me know. i can definitely help you get out of it.

Two winters ago I had slid through an intersection just as it was about to turn red. I was just about fully stopped when I hit a patch of black ice and wham… right through the intersection. Light flashed and I knew I would get one in 2-4 weeks.

I waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing. So being the honest person I am, I called the traffic department that handles the red light cameras. I gave them my licence plate and they pulled up the picture of my car in the intersection. They said they took in the follow considerations for me not getting a ticket:

    1. Snowing
    2. Ice in the intersection
    3. Back brake lights were illumninated

Those three things saved me $190! Phew.
