How to Get Teens Interested in Personal Finance

That’s the title of my latest BlogHer post.

An alternate post title could be: How to Groom Teens to Become Future Personal Finance Bloggers With An Irrational Love of All Things Related to Saving and Investing.

As I wrote in the BlogHer post, I’m not a parent. But, I have survived the teenage years to emerge as someone who gets really, really excited about 401Ks. That has to give me at least a little bit of credibility, right? icon wink How to Get Teens Interested in Personal Finance

I wish someone explained personal finance to me when I was a teen. I was absolutely horrible with money up until I was about 21. I’m definetely going to teach my son all about money and how to be smart with it!

  2. I know the feeling — I wasn’t really taught money skills other the “don’t do what we’ve done” variety. In fact, when I started getting into finance, I sent my Mom a bunch of articles! I’ve always cheered her on to making better decisions, even though she’s already very thrifty. Kinda weird, but it’s neat in a way. :)

One of the things I’m hoping to do with my life is some sort of financial program with kids. I was thinking of a summer camp of sorts, or just classes and things for elementary kids all the way up to high school/college/young adult types. And, of course, working with adults as well.

Very nice article! I especially liked the part about saving your lunch money… I did that too!

The overall idea, that it’s important to teach kids about money, is so important. I watched grandparents and aunts/uncles swell up with credit card debt, but I didn’t fully understand what was happening to them until I got in a hole with my credit cards. Luckily, I was able to dig my way out and now understand the ramifications of buying things on credit. If I had parents who had explained interest rates and savings plans… Who knows where I’d be today?
