I am a big fan of letting my guests know that I need x or y. For example, i never have enough plates if I have more than a few people so I will generally let people know I would appreciate it if they will bring plates. Also, I will let people know that I may not be serving dessert so if they want some then bring their favorite and bring enough to share. My friends usually are fine with this.

I love having people over for meals, but since our apartment is so small, we rarely have people over for a full meal. Another cost-effective dinner party idea is to have an appetizer party, where you just prepare a bunch of little snacks (mini-hot dogs in a ketchup+grape jelly sauce are one of my crowd-pleasers...seriously). Ask guests to bring something to share as well, and you'll have a fun night of casual hanging out while everyone grazes. Trust me, you'll have plenty to eat. :-)
