Experience, Not Stuff

Experience, Not Stuff

Experience, not stuff: I've decided to make this my mantra to live by. It'll be hard, because I like nice things (ex: shoes), but guess which of the following I remember the most? (a) A $100 leather jacket purchased in Buenos Aires, that I've worn ONCE in 3 years. (b) A $45 hour-long horse ride on ...

Unexpected Car Expenses

by WellHeeled on December 7, 2009

This Sunday night, my car greeted me by making a sad sputtering noise when I tried to start the engine. My last major repair cost $350 in May. Before that, I spent $400 in November 2008. I’m not overjoyed at the prospect of another big repair, but I understand that my car is old. And, well, old cars need more attention. Car repairs usually cost me $1,000 a year, so… I’m right on schedule.

My most recent BlogHer post was on the ways that unemployment can cost more than you think. The three major areas I discussed were (1) health insurance, (2) travel, and (3) friends / hobbies-related expenses. However, I realized that I’ve forgotten one big cost – the unexpected costs that car ownership can bring.

Aside from the normal, recurring costs, such as car payment, routine car servicing, and auto insurance, you also have to take into account costs of accidents, major repairs, and possibly car replacement. Being unemployed does not mean that your car will cooperate and delay its troubles. And in the morning I’ll learn just how much this unexpected expense will cost me. [Edit: car repair "only" cost $120! Yes for beating anticipated costs.]

In other news, I’ve made it through an initial screen and will be moving on to a second round of interviews. Your good thoughts must have helped – I’d appreciate it if you can please keep ‘em coming. :)

Sounds like your battery possible your starter. Most likely your battery especially if it's 3+ years old.

WellHeeled December 11, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Not the battery (recently replaced). Turns out it's the spark plug seals, valve gaskets and distributor cap.

Congrats, girl! I'm sure you're going to rock it! Keep thinking positive!

About the car, I know how crummy that can be. I recently added up how much my car costs me each semester… Woo! I'm really considering buying a $50 bus pass (discounted for students) and riding the bus all of next semester to save some major cash. Is public transit an option where you live? If so, I'd look into it.

Reply

WellHeeled December 11, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Unfortunately, public transportation is not really an option. I admit I do love the freedom (limited by traffic) that my car provides though.

Earlier this year I added up our car costs, I think we are spending $7,000 or $8,000 a year on two paid for vehicles. They cost way more than you think when you look at the big picture. Glad your repair wasn't too costly, car troubles are no fun!
