But I know I shouldn’t. Because (1) I don’t have a source of income, (2) I am spending $1,500 buckaroos on Disney World (will be completely worth it!), (3) I’ve spent several hundred dollars traveling for campus visits, friend visits, and interviews.
This means that although I look at luxury sample sale sites and indulge in window shopping, I haven’t really purchased very little ”stuff” for 4 months (I’ve purchased 1 pair of sandals and a T-shirt in New York City, and a pair of tango shoes). That seems like a really long time.
This time has made me realize how often I’ve used something new to as a little pick-me-up, or a just-because. The proper personal finance mantra to repeat would be: I see how I have all the things I need and that life isn’t about new coat or a fancy dinner.
Which is true.
That said, I would really like this pair of leather boots right about now:
J.Crew. $300 with 30% off until Sunday, December 13.
It’ll be $210 after the discount. Add in taxes and shipping charges, total will be closer to $250.

Ha, ha, that's funny. There is a pair of black J.Crew boots that I have been eyeing with a 30% discount. They are $250 and they are this amazing fusion of black riding boots and motorcycle boots. I decided against buying them, but I was going through this exact same internal conflict last weekend. Have you checked out Kohl's? There Simply Vera collection is where I go now instead of J.Crew.
Just looked at Kohl's online. Nothing catches my eye..
I'm eyeing a pair of winter boots (completely practical yet stylish) that are $200. You're not alone!
Have you worn J.Crew shoes before? I wasn't that impressed with their quality when I saw them in real life. Yes, they look cute in the catalog, and the price tag makes you think they're worth it, but I would put my money on a different brand of shoe, even though the style is cute. I bet you could find a less expensive, cuter pair at DSW or Zappos. I would save the 250.
Onegirl, you are right. I have never bought J. Crew shoes, but the pair I had from Banana Republic proved to be really chintzy. The riding boots I do have I think I got at Macy’s really discounted. I always get compliments on them, too. To be perfectly honest, I rarely see shoes that I like at DSW, and I usually find the shoes that I want for less at the department store than at Zappos. Marshalls, Filene’s Basement, TJ Maxx, etc tend to have the best deals.
You've convinced me! I'll look around at DSW, TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Last year I found a few pairs of Cole Haans that I really like, but they 1/2 sizes too big.
I've heard that BR shoes aren't that comfortable. I've never tried on J.Crew shoes before. Another thing that deters me from ordering is the high shipping fee. I think J.Crew might have the least customer-friendly shipping of any major apparel site.
I've always had the best luck with Nine West… and if you wait until the after holidays or after season sales you can find great stuff!
I love my $300 J. Crew boots.
I forced myself to come straight home after going to the bank instead of wandering downtown and getting tempted
So I hear you
With that being said, I love my dark brown knee-high Ecco boots — awwwwesome quality
Ugh, whoever said money can't buy happiness did not purchase these Cole Haan boots:

I live in them. So that saves me $500/mo on rent, right?
Hehehe. Twisted logic, but I like.
I'm not into fashion stuff at all…but if I were going to spend $300 on footwear, it wouldn't be on something quite so plain. I just don't see anything special about them. Heck, they look a bit cankle-y. What did you end up getting?
I like it because it's plain… although I prefer the term classic
I didn't get anything. But I've got my eyes out for a similar pair (knee-high brown leather boots with a low to mid-heel) at some off-price retailers.
Somehow those boots just don't do it for me. I have to say that I've been very impressed with the selection that TJMaxx and Marshalls have to offer lately. I also do some shopping at Zappos and their 6PM outlet. Nice deals to be had there as well.
