How many times have you made a goal – to exercise every day, perhaps, or to stop eating out for 3 months, and then mid-way through you slip up? It can be discouraging when that happens, and many times our first instinct is to think, well, I already had a donut / bought a new shirt / spent a day lazying on the couch instead of working out, so why not just do it again?
The point of all that is that, well, I missed Day 8 (yesterday) of the 30 Day Shred. I know! I am disappointed in myself too. Though I first tried to justify that surely 2 hours of tango (i.e. traveling across the dance floor at the speed of music) will suffice for one day’s exercise allotment, I started hearing Jillian’s voice in my head “that’s a false message of lethargy that does you no favors!”
So I’ve decided to do Day 8 & Day 9 of the Shred on, well, the actual Day 9. I finished Day 8 just now, and will be hitting the mat at around 8pm for Day 9. That means I can still say I stayed on the wagon, right? I’ve also decided I’m going to work ahead and finish Friday’s workout on Thursday, so I don’t have to lug a heavy laptop to NYC. Here is my Shredule (get it?) for the week:
Monday (Day 8): Fell off the Shred wagon. No excuses.
Tuesday (Day 9): Make up Day 8 & finish Day 9 workout.
Wednesday (Day 10): Day 10 workout.
Thursday (Day 11): Day 11 & Day 12 workout
Friday (Day 12): No need to worry while I’m in NYC!
Saturday (Day 13): Back on schedule with Day 13.
A reader said that doing the 30-Day Shred is as mental as it is physical. I agree. After missing the workout yesterday, I realized how easy it is to get off track. But I’ve committed to the 30 Day Shred, and I’m going to do 30 workouts in 30 days even if Jillian kills me. Setbacks shouldn’t mean that we should let go of our big goals, if anything, the victory will be all the sweeter having had – and overcome – these setbacks.
At least that’s what I’ll be telling myself over the next 22 Shred workouts!

It's amazing how hard it is to fit that 20 minutes in! Once we do it, I'm like, "Oh, was that all?"
Only 22 more to go!!
I was in walmart today buying some pillow stuffing, and I walked by a bin in the middle of a walkway and there was the 30 day Shred. I looked at the price and it was $7.49, and I bought it. I'm on the bandwagon with you now!!!
Did you do measurements or pictures before? I will try and do the Shred tonight to see what it's like. From what I've heard about it, I'm excited and very nervous!
I think that is very inspirational. I do admit though that it was nice thinking you were human for a moment.
Totally human!
And I haven't done serious, regimented workouts in years… so it's quite a shock to my system to have Jillian yelling at me from the computer screen.
Agreed! Sometimes I think I spend more energy dreading the workout than actually doing it. Then I do it. And then I realize, I expand more energy with Jillian than anything else. Haha.
I remember a blog poster (I think it was Trent from The Simple Dollar, might be wrong) blogging recently about the perfect being the enemy of the good – so many people fall off the wagon and then go "Oh, stuff it, I've gone and blown it now". They don't think about how they can get back on the track towards achieving their goal. No one is perfect, but if we strive to be good, we'll get there.
You crack me up with "shredule" – and I'm impressed with your ability to stay on track! My inclination is to say, "Well, I missed a day. Oh well. Life got in the way, and I don't mind." I am good at justification! Way to go – I'm rooting for you!
Way to go!!
You’ll be so RIIIIIIIPPPPEED!

I think it's great!! So proud of you! I am going to try again next week – still recovering from the flu here and now my cousin's death. But I will not give up.
I will say that even though I can work out for an hour at a time doing the treadmill and some circuit training, Shred kicks my ass. I am not doing high intensity training right now, but at my weight, that's difficult anyway.
But hey, I'm trying!!
Well done! You're on the wagon in my book. What really matters is that you are sticking with it and not using one missed day to give up on the whole program.
I think that working this kind of a program really helps establishing discipline that overflows into other areas of life. That's been my experience with following my running coaching program on Nike+.
Three cheers for Well Heeled
I did measurements, no pictures. Congrats on getting started.. it will be.. fun.
Great job lady. I agree about the mental vs. physical part… every time I'm training for a race or other event, I often find the mental act of getting to the gym or even getting out the door is harder than the actual workout. Inevitably, about 2 SECONDS into the workout I'm happy that I started. By the way, I started doing shred on exercise TV on Demand, and I just bought the DVDs… on days I can't get to the gym it really is a great alternative. Keep up the great work!
Only 22 more days! I can't do the shred for 30 days straight. 10 days, maybe. But 30 days…I get tired of Jillian fast. I just want to throw something at my tv.
Woo! That's a good Idea to stick in the workout on another day…I made the conscious decision to not do the Shred on Sundays as long as I could fit in a 45 minute walk. I did this mostly because I needed the mental break! But now you've given me the idea that maybe I can just double up on the Shred on Saturdays! Fantastic!
I also just blogged my progress, I haven't really lost weight, but I'm already seeing a few quarter inches gone from some parts of my body!!! So exciting!
There must be something in the air, I've slipped this week too, now I'm going to redouble my efforts and lose 5 pounds next week (I'm going to cheat and do the atkins diet for 2 weeks just to get to into a bare minimun level of fitness. Once I get back on track, I'll do it the right way
Good luck, jump back into it!!!
