Spending Goal: $2,000 On My Wardrobe in 2012

Most of personal finance is about how to earn, save, and invest money. Yet, spending money with intention is just as important.

Bottom line, I don’t think there should be guilt associated with responsible spending. That is why I have made a goal of spending $2,000 in 2012 on something that is important to me: a wearable, chic, cohesive wardrobe. The $2,000 will cover everything related to editing, building, and refining my wardrobe, including alterations, shoe inserts, bag repairs, jewelry and accessories, etc. I am going to try to limit myself to $150/month, and have a month or two when I can make an extra purchase if I want – such as when I head to Buenos Aires, Argentina in June.

My favorite stores include Banana Republic, Gap, J. Crew, Nordstrom Rack, and TJ Maxx. I also check out sample sites Ideeli and Rue La La quite a bit. Before I make any purchases online, I go through Ebates so I can get 2%-5% cash back on my purchases. That money goes into my Funny Money account. I am a consummate sales shopper who tries really hard to look for at least a 50% discount on the original retail price before I pluck down my credit card. That’s how I am confident that I can get attire that is of good quality (wool, silk, and leather, fully-lined, etc.) at fairly reasonable prices. But at my planned spending limit, Louboutins are definitely out. icon wink Spending Goal: $2,000 On My Wardrobe in 2012

Why spending goals are important

When I first started blogging, and even to this day, there’s a level of guilt associated with buying things for myself – things that are not considered “necessary” or “important” (i.e. non-educational items). But we all make money to spend it – what matters is how we spend and on what we spend. And the only right answers to those questions, of course, is responsibly and joyfully and things that we value. With a spending goal, I can structure my expenses so that they are guilt-free, planned, and carefully considered. If I didn’t have spending goals, I may very well STILL spend $2,000 on clothes and shoes. But my purchases wouldn’t be nearly as fun or as planned.

(Also, a confession: I’ve tried to try (and like) the minimalist thing, and I decided that there is a difference between my 3 black wool sheaths, and I do need a 4th. Oops!)

Do you have spending goals for 2012?

My Holiday Splurge

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas / Happy Hanukah / wonderful holiday celebration! I didn’t step one foot into a store this weekend, but unfortunately (or fortunately), the easy access of online shopping meant that I’ve made a few holiday splurges. I’ve said it before.. there is something about the holidays that make me loosen my wallet, without fail. According to news of the retail sale jumps and credit card usage increases, I’m not the only one buoyed by the spirit of the season to spend a little (more).

Thanks to a Christmas bonus and Mom’s birthday gift, I found myself in possession of an unexpected $700. Thanks to this boon I went a little crazy with the buying. In addition to a couple of dresses for work, I got a Linea Pelle overnight/weekend bag. The Dylan 24 Hour Overnight Bag retails for $595, but now that it’s out of season I’ve seen it marked down to $300+ on eBay. In a stroke of luck, I found it for just $139.99 plus $10 shipping on Ideeli.

linea pelle dylan overnight bag1 300x271 My Holiday Splurge

It looks great online, and I’ve heard that Linea Pelle has gorgeous leather, so I am definitely excited about this “gift to myself”. $150 was near the top end of what I would be willing to spend on a bag, but I thought this was too good of a deal to pass up (yes, I actually thought that – too good a deal to pass up! No, please don’t kick me out of the personal finance blogger club). Now I can travel with a little more panache than just with my $10 duffel bag from Ross.

What was your biggest splurge this holiday season?

Weird Saving Tricks I Use

Do you use weird saving tricks? We’ve heard of all the normal ones: automatic deduction from your paychecks, setting aside 10% of your income for retirement, putting your tax refund into your savings account, blah blah blah. I’m not talking about those. I’m talking about the idiosyncratic and really strange little mental tricks you play on yourself so you can squeeze out a few extra dollars of savings here and there. In fact, I have a specially named sub-account for savings from these weird tricks - I call it my Funny Money account.

funny money Weird Saving Tricks I Use

Here are some of my weird saving tricks:

  1. When I make brunch at home, I put away $15-20 (what it would have cost us to go out to eat). Last weekend, we somehow managed to cook at home not once but twice, so $40 went from my bank account to the Funny Money Fund on Monday. We eat out at brunch way too often, and the funny thing is that brunch is my favorite meal to make, at a time -weekends- when I have time to make it.
  2. When I make a return (a dress that I just couldn’t make work, or shoes that don’t fit right), I take the money I get back and I put it in a savings account. Impulse buys, thou shalt not get the best of me!
  3. When I get a gift card as a present or as a bonus from credit cards, I try to put 1/2 of the face value into my savings account.
  4. When I stay at a hotel for free because of points redemption, I save $10-$40 depending on how expensive the hotel was.
  5. When I window-shop and I make the (frankly very difficult) decision to NOT buy that perfect pair of stacked suede heels or mirrored jewelry box with velvet lined interior, I put the money I would have spent into the Funny Money Account.

I use these little tricks because saving is just as much mental and emotional as it is mathematical. I know I am a spender trapped in a saver’s body – it’d be way too easy for me to overspend if I don’t put a few safeguards in place. So I have the big ones such as 401K deductions, but I also try to make it a fun game for myself and make sure that when I DO overcome those impulse buys or get lucky with gift cards or free stays, I put away a little something too. If the money is just swimming around in the checking account, I know I’m going to spend it.

Do you have any weird saving mind tricks you use?

Santa dropped by with a Kindle Fire

By Santa, I meant my fiance. He snuck out of the house yesterday morning and came home with a Kindle Fire for me – happy surprise indeed! We had talked about getting an e-reader or a tablet this year, but I have been hemming and hawing about the price. I guess he got tired of my indecision and made a judgment call.

So far, I really like the Kindle Fire. I’ve been playing with the tablet all day. At $199, it’s much cheaper than the iPad (of course, with fewer capabilities, apps, etc.), but for my needs – light blogging, reading, web surfing, it is perfectly adequate. In fact, I am typing this post on the Fire right now. I haven’t completely ruled out returning the Fire and getting the $99 Kindle Touch instead, for the e-ink and the longer battery life. But it is nice to get wifi and be able to read content online. Either way, I will have to watch out and make sure I don’t go crazy with buying $10 books every week. Given that I can go through normal paperbacks in a couple of hours, I will have to stock up on free books as often as I can.

Do you have a tablet or an e-reader (or are you getting one this holiday season)? If you have good sources for free reading material, please share in the comments!

Who’s The Shopper In Your Family?

Every family has at least one! Compared to my parents, I am definitely the shopper. With CB, I used to think it was just me. But now I’ve realized – we both are!

On Wednesday Banana Republic had a 50% off coupon for full priced items you purchase in stores. After I saw that news from Revanche’s tweet, we printed out the coupon and quickly drove to our local Banana Republic. Let me tell you, I have never seen that many men in one clothing store at the same time! We picked up a wool top coat (retail $250) and a lightweight zip jacket (retail $98) for CB. After the 50% coupon and $125 in gift cards (thanks credit card points), we walked out of the store having only spent $68.

It’s funny, I think I only realized recently that CB likes to shop for clothes, and I like helping him pick out things. In many ways, I think men’s clothing tend to be more classic, better constructed for the price, and more long-lasting. So I don’t mind him buying nicer items. Plus, when he buys something, it makes me feel less guilty about spending on myself (maybe not so good for our combined household spending!). In fact, one of our favorite things to do is to frequent the well-stocked Nordstrom Rack near our apartment, where I will browse the earrings and shoes while CB checks out the pants and jeans.

So, who’s the shopper in your family or relationship?

10 Places To Buy Inexpensive Wedding Dresses Online

My favorite part of wedding planning is looking at dresses. But I didn’t much like to look at them in person – I guess I just got used to shopping online in the comfort and privacy of my home. Plus, I knew my budget didn’t allow me to go to any bridal salons, and often times the selection (and sizing!) are more ample on the internet. With all the great options that have sprung up in the past few years, there is no reason to let money stand in the way of a bride and a beautiful dress.

You can spend thousands or even tens of thousands on your wedding gown. Even ladies with budget-friendly weddings often put four-figures into their dress. But if you, like me, has a budget that is a bit slimmer than that figure, don’t despair. There are plenty of stores, bridal and otherwise, that offers inexpensive and stylish dresses for $500 or less. In fact, you can even veer into seriously-inexpensive territory with dresses that fall under $300 or $200.

collage 1024x640 10 Places To Buy Inexpensive Wedding Dresses Online

Here are ten of my favorite websites where I found inexpensive wedding dresses. Lots of them.

1. BCBG. BCBG won me over when I found this elegant, structured dress (#6 in collage). It’s not strapless! and just $598.00. For brides who are looking for a blush / pink colored dress, the Torey (#3 in collage) is under $400 and looks absolutely stunning (check out that back!).

2. TheLimited. When I was middle schoool, I considered TheLimitedToo the height of fashion. Now that I am a little more grown up, I find their wedding dresses to be some of the most affordable gowns out there. The Final Sale items are an especially good value (of course, there is always the element of risk in ordering a nonreturnable gown online). These two dresses are only $79! I love the rosette detailing on this gown (#1 in collage), and it’s only $159.

3. Ann Taylor. Ann Taylor’s price point is a little bit higher than some of the other retailers, but the dresses look lovely. Very understated gowns. The Olivia gown with a backless design, at $550, is one of my favorites. Plus the store has great return policies.

4. ShopBop (sales section!). Go to ShopBop’s bridal section, and sort for price. That way you’ll see all the dresses under the $500 mark first. icon smile 10 Places To Buy Inexpensive Wedding Dresses Online This ACL dress is only $150 on sale. This Halston Heritage is under $500.

5. White House Black Market. Look at the Alexandra (#4 in collage)! The elegant choice if you are lucky to have a tall, statuesque build. (If I suddenly grew 11 inches taller? This would be MY dress).

6. Sample Sale Sites such as RueLaLa and HauteLook. I’ve seen several bridal sample sales (Nicole Miller, Sue Wong) on RueLala and HauteLook. The offerings include dresses, of course, but also veils, bridal jewelry, shoes, and clutches. Sign up for their emails to keep abreast of when the bridal sales will happen. Unfortunately, I was always too late to the sale to scoop up a dress in my size.

7. Ruby Lane. If you are looking for vintage dresses, I believe there is no better place than on Ruby Lane. I have noticed that the prices here also tend to be somewhat lower than on Etsy. This empire-waist silk shantung gown is under $200. Try getting a brand-new gown at that price with real silk. Or, if you are looking for something more romantic, how about the 1960s lace and chiffon number?

8. Nordstrom. When people talk about excellent customer service, I think of Nordstrom. So I would feel very safe buying my gown online from this store. This JS gown is inspired by Pippa Middletown‘s dress. But for $200, it’s probably, oh, 800% percent cheaper than the royal bridemaid dress!

9. Lord & Taylor. Lord & Taylor has a small but well-curated selection of gowns online. An embellished Sue Wong dress (#5 in collage) is discounted for $285.99. Another beautiful Pippa Middletown copy by ABS is at under $400.

10. David’s Bridal: David’s Bridal’s Buy Online selection of dresses starts at just $99, like this strapless pleated gown.  Want a ball gown (#2 in collage) without the ball gown price? This beauty is also $99.. I love this dress with the bold rose detail at the waist.

Tell me, what are your favorite places to shop online for inexpensive wedding dresses? Do I have any bride-to-be’s that saw something you like in this list?

Get the Best Deal: Ask for Price Adjustment

Do you ever make a purchase and a day or two later, realize that the item is on sale for cheaper than you had bought it for? That has happened to me more than once. Fortunately, most retailers have a price adjustment policy, so getting a lower price might be as easy as making a phone call or sending an email.

How to get a price adjustment

  • Check the policies. Some places allow a price adjustment within 7 days of purchase, others give you 2 weeks or more. Sometimes price adjustments can only occur on non-sale items or non-final sale items.
  • Request the adjustment. Companies won’t do it unless you ask. Many stores will accept a request via email. If not, I find that a quick call to the customer service department works wonders. Be sure to have the order number on hand for a quick resolution
  • If you are not sure of the policy (or even if the company doesn’t have a policy), it never hurts to ask. Reiterate how much you enjoy buying from the company, and that you’d like to receive a price adjustment.
  • If all else fails, see if you can make a purchase at the new lower price and return the item purchased at the higher price. Make sure that the item you ordered can be returned for a refund if you decide to go this route.

Just yesterday evening, I realized that a little black dress I ordered from Gap last weekend has dropped in price from $59.99 to $44.99. Plus, there was a new 30% off coupon to boot! Of course, I immediately called to request a price adjustment. The customer representative couldn’t match the new price with the coupon, so she ordered me a new dress and told me I can return the previous order for a refund. It will take a little extra legwork on my end, but I don’t mind. That extra savings immediately went to a delicious Chinese dinner last night!

Wedding Shoes

The wedding expenses keep growing… slowly but steadily! With my purchase of a pair of pink satin shoes, I can now check one more item off my list. And the best part is, these shoes were marked down to just $20 plus tax because they were on clearance.steve madden gramicy pink heels 2 Wedding ShoesI had originally planned to spend $50-$100 on shoes for the wedding, so I came way under budget. Now, my wedding expenses stand at $1,253. After reading several bridal magazines sent to me courtesy of friends and family, I am becoming influenced by all the beautiful things I am seeing! Even though bridal magazines (ahem hello Martha Stewart Weddings) are full of dresses, flowers, and venues that I cannot afford, I do like the pretty pictures inspiration.

Rebecca Minkoff Beau Clutch: Yay or Nay?

Remember these previous Yay or Nays when you guys talked me out of unnecessary / unflattering items? Well, this time I am in need of your advice again. I see this Rebecca Minkoff Beau Clutch for $150 at a local Nordstrom Rack. In real life, the bag is a little bit more orange-toned than it appears in the picture. I like the size and the length of the strap (it’s a bit shorter, good for petite gals), and the leather seems to be very nice quality.

Do I need it? Of course not. Do I want it? Well, yes, yes I do. I love red purses and clutches, and I’ve heard good things about Rebecca Minkoff.

Yay or Nay, what says you?

Buying An Engagement Ring from Costco

When it comes to buying an engagement ring, future grooms and brides have so many options: retail jewelry store, online merchants, local shops, Etsy sellers, etc. But – I’m guessing – not many people think of Costco when they first embark on the ring shopping journey.

costco ring Buying An Engagement Ring from Costcocostco ring princess solitaire Buying An Engagement Ring from CostcoMy ring is from Costco, and after interviewing (i.e. hounding) CB with questions, I’ve put together a guide for on how to buy an engagement ring from Costco. In case any residual snobbery lingers, Costco sells nice rings, ranging from “pretty” to “must-mortgage-first-born“. In fact, the lowest priced engagement ring I can see on the website is around $2,000. While you won’t get white-gloved treatment or a fancy box, you just might end up with an elegant ring at a better-than-retail-price.

1. Check out Costco.com to see a portion of what’s available. The website offers engagement rings, solitaires, wedding bands, diamond bands, etc. You can buy the rings online and shipping is extremely fast. As you can see from the two pictures, Costco offers a fairly diverse set of rings. If you like something that has a more vintage feel, Costco has something for you. If you want the clean lines and cool sparkle of a solitaire, that is available too.

2. Each Costco store location has a different selection of rings. So, if you live in a metropolitan area within driving distance of several Costcos, try to hit up all of them. The stores also change their offerings periodically. At the jewelry counter, ask the store employees to remove the ring for a closer look.

3. Costco has a very generous return policy, and rings are no exception. According to CB, a store clerk told him that as long as the buyer has the original appraisal and is in good condition, the ring can be returned at any time. I wouldn’t try my luck with a 5-year-old ring… but a year is definitely reasonable. Beware: if you alter the ring (i.e. resize it), it wouldn’t be eligible for return.

4. Costco does not offer resizing services, and many rings may only come in one size or in limited sizes. Also, you cannot customize your ring (i.e. swap out platinum for white gold or get a 0.75 carat in place of a 0.8 carat). If you want to resize your ring, you will have to seek out a local jeweler. Many rings only come in a size 7, and others only come in sizes 5, 6, 7. It’s not a big deal to resize, though. Most rings can be safely resized 2-3 sizes down with a skilled and experienced jeweler.

5. When you buy a ring, you will receive the ring, the box, the receipt, and an appraisal that includes the appraised value of the ring and a description. The appraisal can be used for insurance purposes. My ring was appraised by a gemologist who graduated from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), however, this does not mean that the ring itself was certified by the GIA. This may or may not matter to you.

Costco does sell some rings that are certified by the GIA: rings with diamonds that are greater than 1.25 carats come with a GIA report and an International Gemological Institute appraisal.

6. Costco’s diamonds are in accordance with the Kimberly process.

7. Remember, Costco in-store only accepts debit cards or American Express credit card, so make sure you have those methods of payment.

For more information, check out Costco’s jewelry PDF.

Lazy Shopper

Lazy is not a word I want to use to describe myself, but I’ve realized: I am a lazy shopper. I look for good deals, but I don’t look that hard. And it’s not that I have money to blow, I just find the entire price-comparison process a little tedious. Given the recent raise of couponing in the public eye, I’ve also realized that I don’t even go through the trouble of clipping coupons from the weekly inserts we receive. In fact, every flyer goes straight into the recycling bin.

TLC’s Extreme Couponing, I do not:

Enter the world of bargain shoppers who have mastered the art of saving! In Extreme Couponing, meet the everyday people who save hundreds of dollars in a single trip to the store.

Aside from TV shows, there are entire blogs out there devoted solely to coupons, showcasing people’s ability to get $200 worth of goods for $10 or feed a family of 5 on just $800 a year. (MoneyMateKate is one of my favorite couponers, as she uses her powers for good – donating toiletries and groceries to shelters and other folks in need.)

I want my money to work for me, but I don’t like the time I have to invest in keeping track of coupons, in figuring out a system, in being tempted to buy things that I might not want to buy without a coupon. You might say I’m smart to resist the temptation, or you might just say I’m lazy!

Fortunately the availability of online coupons has helped tremendously for lazy deal-seeker. It’s not too much trouble to look at retailmenot.com or couponcactus.com before I click the “buy” button. It’s not too much trouble to go through Ebates.com to get 2% or 3% from my purchase from Banana Republic or J.Crew.

Are you a lazy shopper? Or are you a leave-no-stones-unturned deal-seeking star?

Talbots Shoes Sale: Small Sizes Still Available

Talbots is having a great sale right now with many shoes dramatically discounted. If you wear a size 5 or 5.5 or 10-11, you are in luck. [Confession: I just picked up a pair of braided leather Gracie heels yesterday. Even with the $6 shipping and taxes, the total just came out to be $22]. There are some beautiful sandals and flats listed in the Outlet section for under $15. For these prices, they are even cheaper than Payless.

I have never bought anything from Talbots before, but I understand that they have a good reputation for quality construction, so I am excited to see how my pair of Gracie heels fit. The shipping is a little high starting at $6 for items under $50, but given the discounts on the shoes, I was willing to take a risk.

Here are a few of my favorite Talbots shoes on sale:

Gracie: braided leather T-strap slides, $119 $14.74, the Platino color, a warm champagne color, is available in size 5, 8.5, 10, and 11 (the black and white versions of the same shoe is available in sizes 5-11!)

Bitten By the Shopping Bug

shopping 225x300 Bitten By the Shopping BugI need your help. I have been bitten by the shopping bug, and now, well, I am finding it very difficult to resist silky blouses, statuesque pumps, or well-constructed blazers.

First of all, you guys were right. I love my J. Crew Lady Day coat. It’s almost perfect, and would be perfect if the sleeves were just 1/2 inch longer, and the cut was 1/2 inch narrower. But those are minor quibbles, overall, the coat is lovely and a great edition to my wardrobe. It was certainly $150 well spent.

Getting that great piece, however, has unleashed the shopper instead! I have been bitten by the shopping bug, and it’s one mean bug. Unfortunately for my budget, I live within 20 minutes of two great malls, a Loehmann’s, a Marshalls, a T.J. Maxx, and numerous other boutiques. Plus, there’s always the world of online shopping. So, like I said, I need your help and advice on how to kick this bug and go into remission!

Do you ever get into these “I want to shop” phases? What tips do you have for beating the shopping bug?

Small Frivolous Purchase Is the Ultimate Pick-Me-Up?

ecote sparrow belt Small Frivolous Purchase Is the Ultimate Pick Me Up?Last weekend while strolling through an Urban Outfitters, I spied a rack full of belts on sale. One of them, the Ecote Sparrow Stretch Belt, caught my eye – it fits very well, and has an interesting hardware detail that I haven’t seen anywhere else. And, it was only $10 on sale (marked down from $24, the price still in effect online).  So I got it. It’s a great belt, and I have already worn with the dresses and cardigans (cinching the waist – see, I AM learning from style bloggers!). Yes, it has only been a month and I have already broken my No Accessories Rule I’ve set out in my stab at minimalism.

Later that day I was chatting with a girl friend, and she asked me how my day was. I told her I bought a new belt, then I added, “$10 isn’t too much to pay for happiness.” I meant that tongue-in-cheek, but a little part of me realized that it’s true – buying the belt really did bring a jolt of happiness. ecote sparrow belt 2 Small Frivolous Purchase Is the Ultimate Pick Me Up?

Why do these little purchases make us happy? Before anyone say it’s a phenomenon limited to women, I know that when CB is feeling down, a $10 DVD is a little pick-me-up for him. I think most people use these small, arguably frivolous purchases as pick-me-ups. I may prefer a used book, a tube of lipstick, or a package of cookies; someone else might want a cheap bottle of wine or 5 songs from iTunes.

Dave Bach would cringe at this “Latte Factor”, but I don’t really feel compelled to stop these purchases. I am not sure what it says about my personal finance discipline or lack thereof. I arrange my finances by making the high-impact decision once (maxing out my 401K, for example), so I can have room to enjoy these small indulgences and still meet my goals. Still, there is something vaguely disconcerting about shopping to feel happy.

Do you make these small purchases? And do they make you happier?

J Crew Lady Day Coat On Sale

jcrewladyday 300x300 J Crew Lady Day Coat On Sale

via J. Crew

Remember this post around the holidays? I was considering buying the J. Crew Double Cloth Lady Day Coat in Dark Plum. At that time, the coat was on sale for $238, $166 after discounts. After tax, it was $185. It’s a lovely coat, but I couldn’t get over the price tag. Then my size was sold out and that was that.

On a whim last night, however, I decided to check out J. Crew’s website. To my surprise, almost all the sizes and colors are back, and as of Sunday all the petite sizes are available.

The Double Cloth Lady Day is now priced at $199.99, $139.99 with the same 30% off and free shipping over $100 (use the code MUSTSHOP). Add in taxes, and I clicked “submit order” for $153.64. The original price was $298.

I passed up the Cole Haan booties I was eying in exchange for this coat. If the sizing doesn’t work out (I think I am between sizes, and sized up because I heard that the Lady Day runs small), then I will have a 2P for sale on this blog.

FYI: If you wear petite sizes, check out this excellent review of the Lady Day coat in 0P by Jean @ Extra Petite.

Seriously, though, it’s time to restrain the shopping. Since the beginning of January I have already spent $250 on clothes, but I am hoping that everything I buy will be 1. of a good value, and 2. will last me for several years. I know that Debt Ninja had some pretty strong words for no-spend challenges, but a no-shopping challenge might just be what I need.

Most of you had quite positive comments on the first post I wrote about the Lady Day Coat, so that pushed my decision along as well.

Cole Haan Air Talia Booties: Yay or Nay?

I’ve mentioned before that I don’t think I can afford to read style blogs. They tempt me into shopping for things that are great for my closet, but not so great for my wallet.

Well, guess what I saw on Wardrobe Oxygen’s website? This beautiful pair of Cole Haan ankle boots staring in my face. At 40% off, they are $150 at Nordstrom. Still a splurge, but not priced so high that they are out of the realm of possibility.

Banana Republic Shopping Spree: My 3 Items for $100

Just two days after I wrote about how I want to want less, I end up with a big Banana Republic haul. (I did just drop off a big bag of old clothes and shoes at the local Goodwill, so I have followed the 1-in, 1-out rule… technically).

Most BR sales run out of the small and petite sizes first. Fortunately, this sale seemed to have bucked that trend. Most of the XXSP, XSP, 0′s and 00′s are still available. So if you are a petite lady like I am, you might see something you like.

To get the most bang for your buck:

  • Use Ebates to get 6% cash back from Banana Republic. If you are new to Ebates, please consider signing up using my referral code, I’d appreciate it.

Here are the 3 items I picked up for a total of just about $100 including tax. Add in the 6% cash back, I’ve “only” spent $94 for three solid quality, workplace appropriate pieces. How’s that for rationalizing? icon wink Banana Republic Shopping Spree: My 3 Items for $100

Petite ruffle pencil skirt

($29.99 sale, $20.99 with 30% off)

I have two Banana Republic pencil skirts (one in black and one in gray), and they are both workhorses in my professional wardrobe. I think this piece will be too – I like the zipper and ruffle detailing, it’s a stylish twist on the usual pencil skirt silhouette, but not too edgy for a day at the office. Last I checked, sizes 00P, 0P, and 2P are still available. I think there was a 10P as well.

Petite Priscilla sweater jacket

(sale $49.99, $34.99 with 30% off)

One reviewer said this sweater reminded her of Chanel. I don’t know if I’d go that far, but I think this is a good piece for the price. Sweaters with structure = comfortable wear + polished appearance. This sweater is 100% merino wool with ribbon trim. Sizes XXSP, XSP, and SP are available.

Petite Martin fit winter wool trouser

(sale $49.99, $34.99 after 30% off)

My favorite pair of work pants is a pair of Martin fit pants that I purchased back in 2006. It has held up remarkably well through almost 5 years of wear, two run-ins with guacamole, and a few loose hems. I bought my first Martin fit for the full $98 price, but I think I’ve certainly gotten my money’s worth. I hope this pair will serve me just as well. Plus, it’s fully lined (as wool pants always should be).
