I did a huge closet clean out last year and my closet was left quite bare. I also got a new suit and pumps to add to my wardrobe since my only suit was pretty awful. I now realize it fit me as well as a potato sack :)

I just recently bought a pair of hiking boots and a pair of sneakers, both more expensive than I had been hoping for (about $100 each). However, I had worn both of my old pairs pairs into the ground, and some knee problems were probably aggravated by the holes I had worn and them being packed out. So I splurged a bit to get professionally fit and some adjustments for the shoes, and now my feet and knees are much happier! It was definitely worth it rather than finding a $35 pair at Kohls that I didn't know would actually be good for my feet.

I've otherwise not done a lot of clothes shopping, but I will be on the lookout to find something to wear for two different weddings this summer. I have been looking for a pair of snowpants in just the right color, but green and orange don't seem to be *in* this season so it's been a struggle.

Mobile plans can be such a ripoff, especially here in Canada where there is just not that much competition, and the CRTC tends to favour the bigger companies over the upstarts by passing certain laws excluding foreign capital, for instance.

I wonder why more people don't opt for something like a debt management plan or debt consolidation. If it can reduce the amount of debt you owe, it seems like a good thing to me. I agree that it does still come to lifestyle and spending choices. There is a reason you got into debt and that is what you need to correct. Getting professional help to negotiate with the companies you owe is bound to help.

I'm so glad you wrote this because just yesterday I was looking at cell phone plans and what my bill would be if I got a smart phone. I find it crazy how much everything costs - and I was having a lot of trouble figuring out how much data I would need to buy (I don't want any charges for going over!). Right now I'm on my sister's family plan so my line alone costs $10, plus a portion of her messaging and basic plan fees. Total about $15-20. An iphone would send that right up to $50/month easily. That's $600/year just for my cell phone bill - not to mention the $200 just for getting the phone!

I'm also glad you mentioned the ebooks craze. There is no reason those ebooks should cost so much money. I think it's artificially inflated to get people to still buy hard books. Anyway, I only have free book downloads from Kindle, and I heard that with Amazon Prime there is free book loaning or borrowing or something. It might be worth it if you are really a big reader.

Not a thing! I am on a year long no spend challenge with the exception of something to wear to my sister's wedding this summer. Unless I have something I can already wear. My goal is to shop my closet!

I'm doing almost the opposite. I'm wearing everything in my closet first (and taking daily photos) to help identify exactly what it is I'd like. So far, I think more dressy work tops, especially long sleeved. Maybe find a buttondown that works well for me. One more black cardigan (mine gets a tone of wear). Maybe another color in pants, like navy. less grey/black, more colors. :) And while I have nice black pumps this month, I want some dressy black oxford booties. But I don't think they are a wardrobe essential, just a wardrobe wish!

I track all of my spending manually with a spreadsheet system. So while I'm out, I make a task with the place name and dollar amount in the Remember the Milk app on my phone and then enter those amounts with all of my receipts into my spreadsheet system every week or two. I <3 Remember the Milk!

Let's see.

* Cell phone is budgeted at $85/month. I expense about $15 of that (half of my data plan), so total average cost out of pocket is about $70/month.
* Cable costs me about $15/month since I have basic cable.
* I don't have Netflix - I found it to be a waste of my time. I do rent the occasional movie from Amazon though, at a cost of about $4 every few months.
* Internet costs me almost $60/month, but I can't really live without internet...
* I mostly only read books on vacation and I stockpile them, so I don't spend that much money on e-books.

So I guess I'm spending over $200/month on technology, wow! :/

Luckily, I don't have to pay for internet or cable, so I just have my cellphone bill (which does not have a data plan), so about $30 - $35/month. I'm not looking forward to the day when I have to pay for internet and cable.
